Why might your therapist want to know your enneagram type? Is it to dish you another label or to merely box you in? Most likely, the people in your life who are dying to know your enneagram type want to better understand you! Whether that be to learn how to hold space for you, support you, or simply to better love you- your enneagram type might just unearth profound wisdom. So how can diving into your enneagram type bring you closer to yourself?

The Enneagram is a model of the human psyche, understood and taught as a typology of nine interconnected personality types. This dynamic system is rooted in ancient wisdom traditions and modern psychology, to help us understand our values and unique survival strategies. As we understand our internalized motivations, fears, and desires- we create freedom for transformation.

Whatever your spiritual background, the enneagram can be used as a tool to move through inner barriers, realize personal strengths, and discover your deepest direction in life. When we look through the enneagram lens, we deepen our understanding of triggers, which are often our best teachers.

Our dominant type is often characterized by behaviors that have best served us throughout our life. And as the enneagram reminds us to hold this type gently, we experience how the interconnected nature of this model cultivates a stronger sense of wholeness. Perhaps we are winging to one type or moving towards another through the path of integration. As I learn about each type, I am gifted with deep compassion for all the unique individuals in my life. This compassion is then extended towards myself, for I am able to recognize these types reflected through my inner world.

Ultimately, the enneagram’s accuracy serves as a holistic mirror to see yourself with more clarity. After all, to know yourself is to love yourself.

Do any of the following types resonate with you?

Type 1: The Reformer- The rational, idealistic type. Principled, purposeful, and perfectionistic with a basic desire to be good, to have integrity, and to be balanced.

Type 2: The Helper- The caring, interpersonal type. Generous, demonstrative, people-pleasing, and possessive with a basic desire to feel loved.

Type 3: The Achiever- The success-oriented, pragmatic type. Adaptable, excelling, driven, and image-conscious with a basic desire to feel valuable.

Type 4: The Individualist- The sensitive, introspective type. Expressive, dramatic, and temperamental with a basic desire to find themselves and their significance.

Type 5: The Investigator- The intense, cerebral type. Perceptive, innovative, and isolated with a basic desire to be capable and competent.

Type 6: The Loyalist- The committed, security-oriented type. Engaging, responsible, and suspicious with the basic desire to have security and support.

Type 7: The Enthusiast- The busy, variety-seeking type. Spontaneous, versatile, acquisitive, and scattered with the basic desire to be satisfied and content.

Type 8: The Challenger- The powerful, dominating type. Self-confident, decisive, willful, and confrontational with the basic desire to protect themselves and others.

Type 9: The Peacemaker- The easy-going, self-effacing type. Receptive, reassuring, agreeable, and complacent with the basic desire to have inner stability/peace of mind.
