By regulating emotional and physiological states, we can begin to live in better balance. Stress has long-lasting negative impacts on the body; yoga helps mitigate damaging effects on the body, by keeping the mind at ease and stagnant energy moving through and out of the body. Holding an asana (posture) and moving from breath to breath teaches us that things eventually come to an end. Yoga helps bring a felt-sensation back into the body. Meaning, yoga is able to help us get out of our heads and into where we should feel safe. Sometimes this sense of safety has been taken from us, through trauma. However, we have a way to meet ourselves where we would like to be— feeling safe in our own skin.

The combination of yoga in community, or group therapy, can be a pivotal moment for those experiencing trauma reactions, or for those who feel like they’ve lost their sense of self. Group therapy can be intimidating, but my job as a facilitator is to bring common ground to those participating and create a sense of safety for everyone in the room. What happens after that is magic— a space for people to come back home to their sense of self.
